Social Media for the Rest of Us

HighTechDad

I heard an interesting statistic today that the smartphone sales accounted for only about 20% of all of the cell phones sold this past quarter. I was actually a bit surprised with that number. I would have thought that the percentage would have been a lot higher.

Of course, I live in a technology bubble. Not only do my various professional and personal work responsibilities require me to be tapped into the latest and greatest Enterprise and Consumer grades of tech, I also sort of live and breathe it in my day-to-day life. So with gadgets orbiting my mind on a regular basis, my vision of reality can sometimes get obscured. Not everybody has or can have the latest in tech.

So about 80% of the cell phone market just have plain old cell phones. I'm curious about those individuals or families and whether they have computers and if they do, do they participate in social media at all? My mother, for example, has a "dumb phone" but does have a Facebook account. My father and stepmom, on the other hand, both have iPhones but don't participate in social media whatsoever. My oldest daughter has a smartphone that my wife and I have "dumbed down" by stripping out all of the data aspects of the phone with the exception of texting, and she is too young to participate in Social Media (even though she has friends who are on Facebook - remember, if you are 13 or younger, technically you aren't allowed on Facebook or other social media sites for that matter – my thoughts on texting and children are here). So there are probably a lot of similar scenarios out there.

This month's assignment for the Lose the Laptop Challenge is about Social Media. So when I write about this topic, I start to really question, who is the audience that I'm writing to? If you are reading is post, there is a good chance that you saw my or someone else's tweet about it or you came from a link within Facebook or FriendFeed. To me, this means that you are already hooked into Social Media in some way or another. But what about those people who are not?

The Challenge this month then is more about you then, as opposed to me, mainly because of the prizes being offered. If you vote, you could win a smartphone, actually TWO of them, specifically an HTC Tilt 2 and two $200 AT&T gift cards. With 2 phones, you and your social media buddy could really easily keep in touch. And I want to be the enabler for those conversations to take place, whether they are via Social Media or not!

I could also win two phones. But honestly, I don't need any more smart phones (my kids would disagree very vocally though). The Challenger who wins is allowed to give them away. How would I do that though and ensure that the winner of a giveaway is someone who is not on social media and/or does not have a smartphone? Essentially, who is truly deserving of winning?

Well, if you have any ideas on how I could give some HTC Tilt 2's away to the right worthy recipient, leave a comment on this post. AND you have to vote for me in order for me to win and be able give these phones away. If I don't don't win, I can't give them away (but perhaps some of the other Challengers might).

And let me know how YOU would use an HTC Tilt 2 by sending me a message on Twitter. I'm @HighTechDad and I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on Social Media, the Lose the Laptop Challenge and any other ideas or questions you may have. Remember, Social Media is all about the CONVERSATION so be sure to ENGAGE!

HTD says: The HTC Tilt 2 is a great smartphone for social media and beyond. Let me know on Twitter how you would use it to further your social media efforts.

If you win (and I hope you do -- been voting every day for more than a week now, I think), I think my brother-in-law (and his wife) would be a worthy recipient of the HTC Tilt 2. He's the type of guy that thinks because he telecommutes from home that a cell phone would be a waste of time and money. I think having a phone like the HTC Tilt 2 would be the perfect opportunity to prove him wrong. We all remember what our lives were like before smart phones, and I'll suspect there aren't too many that would prefer to go back. :-) Good luck in this contest, HTD.

I do not have a smartphone, but I use Twitter & Facebook daily. It's difficult, but not impossible for me to interact on both sites w/my phone. I would love to be able to RT & search twitter easily from my phone. 2 of my children have phones, but they are "dumbed down" as well. Only texting. They can't even download a ringtone. They're not happy about it, but I've learned my lesson with my oldest son. They don't always realize that they are using up data when they download tones or messages from friends. As for ideas about how you could give away the phones, I don't have any at the moment, other than just giving one to me! Kidding aside, I don't know how you would determine whether someone was more deserving than another. I'll think about it more.

I believe that my fiancee' and I are worthy recipients of the HTC Tilt 2. We currently have regular cell phones. My fiancee' is a full-time career firefighter (11 yrs) and the HTC Tilt 2 would enable him to keep in touch with his partners on the job and other emergency personnel at a much faster speed than calling on a regular cell phone. I feel that firefighters put their life on the line everyday to save us and the homes we live in and they should be able to stay in touch with one another in a much easier way. I believe the HTC Tilt 2 would enable him to do that. I have voted for you, of course. Thank you for considering us to be worthy recipients of the HTC Tilt 2.

I believe my fiancee' and I would be right worthy recipients because the HTC Tilt 2 would allow us to to stay in contact with each other as much as possible. My fiancee' is a full-time career firefighter (11 yrs.) and needs to stay in contact with other emergency personnel on a daily basis. We currently have regular cell phones. The HTC Tilt 2 sounds like an "easy to learn/use" social media phone. And I believe that firefighters put their life on the line everyday to keep us and our homes protected and they should be able to have an easier way to stay in touch with one another as much as possible! I voted for you and hope you win. Thank you for considering us as worthy recipients.

I would just ask everyone on facebook why they should win the Tilt 2's and pick the one you think is the most worthy! Of course you may have to limit the # of words or something? Anyway hope you win!!!

I totally agree with you about limiting a child. We have not bought a cell phone for our 12 year old, but many of her friends have cell phones. The standard line for her dad and me is that she will get a cell phone when she starts driving. AND when she does get a cell phone, we plan to block texting (neither her dad or I text). She is looking forward to getting a facebook page when she is 13. She will use my email and will be my friend (she says she wants to do this) so I can monitor her activity. I also know all her passwords - email and even Webkinz. I do find her chatting on my facebook account with family and some of my friends. I wish I had had all these tech things when I was growing up - especially the music tech things, which I have taught a college class on. Not sure what I would do with a new phone since I just got a new iPhone (love it!), but my daughter will obviously want it. I will probably give one to my husband.

I agree with you as a mom of two girls im constantly being told I'm a meany because I won't let my 7 year old get a phone! If I won these I would use one and give my mom the other one she has a dumb phone but is now getting more up to date and texting! I've been teaching her how to use my iPhone! Haha

If I won the phones I would give them to a couple that I know. They have 5 boys and crazy schedules but still use old razor phones. A Tilt would make their lives a lot simpler by being able to track everything easier. My wife and I have an iPhone and can't imagine functioning without a smartphone. By the way, nice site. Love a techy family oriented site. Glad I came across it.
