So this is the end huh? A love story retrospective

So this is the end huh? A love story retrospective

In the beginning... God created the heavens and the earth.

Oh wait..

wrong story. Umm, in the beginning, this iPhone and general smartphone lover was given an HTC Tilt 2 to play with for 4 months for this cool concept called the Lose the Laptop from AT&T. I was a bit skeptical at first. But as time went on, my Tilt 2 and I had some fun adventures. We saw some places, we recorded some things, we took some pictures, we emailed some folks. Ok, I can admit.. we fell for each other in a big way.

The Beginning

Before I converted to an iPhone lover like a lot of the civil (brainwashed??) society, I owned several Windows mobile phones. I believe I owned 5 different ones over time. Now if that does not tell you that I once really love Windows Mobile phones, what does?? Read my post Can the HTC Tilt 2 reclaim me as a great WinMo lover? as I started my new relationship with the Tilt 2 to see if it could win me back. Enter Smartie (aka The Tilt 2)...

After talking for a bit and feeling each other out we wanted to spend some more time together. We decided to...

Travel

I wasn't certain at first if Smartie and I were ready to travel together but we decided to give it a try. I had a couple of trips planned already before I met him. I wasn't sure that I wanted to let Smartie come, but I did anyway. We took a nice long trip to San Jose, CA. Smartie entertained me on the airplane. It sang to me, it read to me, it helped me get some work done. Oh yeah, this was the start of a beautiful friendship. I could definitely see this going somewhere.

I also let him tag along while my kids and I had a pretend vacation in the house. They seemed to like Smartie, and Smartie liked them.

Getting in good with the kids was a good sign. :) I decided that I was indeed really digging my new friend and I wanted to take him more places. Not really exotic places, after all... we just met each other a few weeks before. But we took a little road trip to Galena, IL.

Galena is beautiful, plenty of places to walk around and get to know each other. We started falling for each other... hard.

Since Smartie and I had to travel right after he arrived in Chicago, I decided that it was time to take him site seeing in some of my favorite places around the city. We went on a nice walking date around some beautiful areas in Chicago and took some pictures.

We would definitely be going more places together.

On Being Social

Like the start of any good relationship, eventually you want your new love to meet your friends. We needed to just stop hanging out with only each other and be social. We went to some nice parties, we talked, we tweeted, we decided to become Facebook friends, we sent off some photos. This was going well. He shared the shame addiction to social media that I do. WOW! He helped me entertain the kids and setup playdates with friends mom's on Facebook. I think I love him. :)

Shopping

So what do you do when you decide that you want a new love to hang around for a while??? You make them go shopping with you!! If they can take the heat, then you will probably last a while. LOL! First we had to make sure that he was well equipped to handle shopping with me. We souped him up with some apps from the Marketplace. Then, it was time to hit the pay dirt!

He was really cool with shopping and even allowed me to get a pedicure while we shopped! HEAVEN!!! I got a new bag and some pretty toes at the same time. :)

We also ordered some movies for date nights at home using Netflix.

Gotta love it.

In Love

And now here we are about 4 months into our relationship and we are pretty inseparable. Smartie and I go everywhere together. We do just about everything together. We just click. He understands my need to keep up with what is going on right NOW. This is super easy. He will update me whenever I need him to. We have so much in common. It is really refreshing. We even made a great video chronicling our relationship so far. Have you seen it?  If not check here.

I think that he has a good chance of being The One. Sigh....

Please click the blue VOTE button above and vote for me! Let's take this out with a bang and win that $5000 for July!!

The Final Purchase” (Part 3)

He enjoyed the obscurity that the shadows of the train station provided him. He easily slipped between alcoves and doorways, at times jumping into the moving crowds. Everything was falling in place the way that he had planned and he was in the final stretch. Only, he hadn't planned on them catching up with him so quickly.

The file had been transferred, he had "lost the laptop", the safe house thoroughly destroyed, and with an unplanned stroke of luck, the provider of the data had been killed in the process, thus closing the loop and erasing almost all chances of his personal mission failing. But he wasn't out of the woods yet as four pairs of agents were combing the train station with orders of shoot him on sight.

But he still had a few tricks up his sleeve. He initiated a plan that was so over used that nobody tried it any more. He hoped that the mere obviousness of it would act to his advantage and people would simply think he was panicking.

Pulling the HTC Tilt 2 from his pocket again, he did a quick search for a local taxi service. After finding the phone number, he quickly dialed it. Slipping casually into the local dialect, he spoke a few sentences and gave the company a credit card number, one that was not entirely off the radar. His view from the shadowed alcove gave him a clear look at the front entrance and within a minute or two, he saw the cab pull up.

"Want to make some quick money?" he asked the vagrant who shared the alcove. He peeled off some bills from a thick wad in his pocket. The bum's eyes lit up, putting down the tattered cup he was using to collect change from passers-by. He quickly emptied the pockets of his jacket and helped the vagrant put it on. Not a perfect fit but good enough. He whispered some instructions to the vagrant who nodded as the money changed hands.

The timing was perfect. The cab was waiting by the time the 4 pairs of agents' earpieces started crackling with electronic information. The vagrant had started walking at a brisk pace toward the front entrance as the agents received the confirmation that the target had just made a credit card transaction for a cab at the train station. By the time the vagrant was 50 feet from the door, he was running as quickly as his tired legs could carry him.

The agents started sprinting after him, clearly outlining their locations around the station. They were falling for the oldest trick in the book. The vagrant got through the front door and into the waiting cab much faster than expected. He watched the chase unfolded before his eyes. The cab door slammed and the taxi screeched away from the curb. Seconds later, two large SUVs pulled up at the front entrance and the eight agents jumped in. The SUVs sped off, leaving behind a smell of burnt rubber.

He waited a few more seconds in the darkened alcove and then headed toward a local shop within the train station.

Once hidden in the aisles of the shop, careful not to have his back to the door, he perused the contents of the shelves. Perched near the cash register was a small stuffed animal. It was perfect. He scooped it up and placed it down next to the register. The sales person smiled.

"Last minute purchase?" she asked.

He squeezed out a grin and handed over a bill, but suddenly he panicked. MINUTE! He glanced at his watch. Time had passed too quickly and the unplanned distraction scheme had thoroughly messed up his timetable. He sprinted out of the store and down to the platform of the departing train.

As he hopped on the last car, he glanced back over his shoulder. No one was following him. He made his way to his seat and slumped down. Apart from his cell phone, he was empty handed.

The stuffed animal sat back at the cashier, abandoned.

The Mobile Spy

The Mobile Spy

Cypher, Location & Discovery (Part 2)

Catch up on Part 1 of “The Mobile Spy” here.

He wondered how the hell they had found him. It must have been his business contact, Mark Z. He should never have trusted Mark. He should have known better. There is something about information exchange that is just inherently risky, especially with information of this caliber.

They had met through a mutual acquaintance at the Austrian embassy. Mark had a huge list of contacts, along with all of their personal, contact, photos and location information. The list was for sale to the highest bidder. From agency contacts to double agents and their family members, this was THE list of lists.

Their meeting had been coordinated cryptically though a mutual Yugoslavian contact. The "list" was a subset of Mark Z's master list, but this was the cream of the crop, and well worth the $5 million. To have obtained all of the contact information, photos and history of the upper echelon of world spies was a complete faux pas. This was going to be his last big transaction. Once the information and money changed hands, he was going to be in the final stretch and could drop out of the crazy, unpredictable life he was living.

He missed his wife and boy. Recently, he had been thinking of them more often. He wanted out and this deal was going to be his way out. He would know more about every person in every agency around the world than they knew about their own employees. With that type of information and leverage, he and his family would be guaranteed a protected life.

“R U there" popped the message on his laptop. It was from Mark Z, the Austrian agent. "Y" was his quick reply. They kept their correspondences short so that the bits would get lost in the huge data stream. He pulled up the social map and saw that the agent was writing near-by.

"GR8" came the reply from Mark - Great

"N2 M121" he wrote - Need to meet 1 on 1

"K" was the response from the Austrian.

"$ redi" he wrote back - Money is ready.

"WRU@" wrote the Austrian - Where are you at?

He posted his location.

"LTL & GmobL" - Lose the Laptop and go mobile was the response from Mark.

The HTC Tilt2 slid quietly out of his pocket. He fired up the agency-installed covert locator app that instantly triangulated his location. The message stream encryption indicator turned from red to green, ensuring that the conversation couldn't be monitored.

Using cell phones was now the preferred method compared to laptops, which frequently were compromised due to malware, keyloggers and other trojans. Most agencies around the world had moved to smart phones to ensure portability, reliability and mobility in general.

He quickly located the Austrian on the mobile maps. He was nearby.

"Your laptop has been cracked," texted the Austrian. "It's on the grid. You had just one too many check-ins."

"Crap" he texted back. He knew the drill. Once the laptop was compromised, it became a liability and had to be left behind. But, he wasn't quite finished with it.

"It's ok, I can still send you the file," wrote the Austrian. "Do you have the funds?"

"Of course," he wrote back. This was his ticket out, his insurance policy for a life without looking over his shoulder, a life of relative normalcy. Over the years, he had quietly been stashing money from various covert assignments. This year marked the point when he finally had enough saved away and he could use it to “buy” his way out.

Mark Z texted, "Ok, please start the wire transfer. I will begin sending you the file. But let’s do this quickly, I may have been followed. Meet at the same place?"

"Yes, I will hand you the account information once we meet," he wrote. The geo-locater showed that Mark Z, was at the cafe, just around the corner from the safe house.

They both sat at the pre-defined tables, back to back and covering each others' blind spots. The progress bar on his cell phone showed the transfer at 99%. He pulled the thumb drive out of his pocket and turned slightly in his chair. The Austrian did the same, handing him a sheet of paper with the password for the encrypted file. At 100%, the items changed hands.

He plugged in the password into the HTC and watched the names and confidential personal information materialize on the screen. The Austrian tapped on his cellphone and smiled as he accessed the bank account. Everything looked to be in order.

Suddenly a car screeched around the corner. The Austrian's eyes widened. He stood up quickly and sprinted out of the cafe. As Mark Z. ran down the street, the man calmly took a sip from his espresso.

The pops came in rapid succession and the Austrian pitched forward into the street, not feeling anything by the time his body crumpled into the gutter. The car barely slowed as a face peered through the darkened window and then screeched down the street and around the corner.

The man carefully unfolded a bill from his wallet, left it on the table, and then quietly walked in the opposite direction from the quickly forming crowd. He pulled out his cellphone and initiated the file transfer, wirelessly moving his precious data back to the laptop at the safe house. Once the transfer was complete, he headed to the safe house. He had to lose the laptop and move on.

Let Freedom Ring!

Let Freedom Ring!

The 4th of July is an important holiday for our country.  It represents the birth of our nation, and the remembrance of those who shaped our country and those who died for it.  It also represents freedom.

Freedom is something Americans have sought after and savored for years.  Freedom for Americans goes well beyond freedom for our country and freedom of speech.  Remember the old days when you used to have to get up and walk across the room to change the TV station?  What about when you'd have to stay seated close to your phone when talking because the handset was attached to the phone with a cord?  Remember when you were expecting an important call and had to  stay home all day to receive it?

Remote controls, cordless phones, and cellphones have given us a lot of freedom.  I just finished writing an article about Moen's new ioDIGITAL shower controls  with its optional remote control.  Now you can wake up, press your custom preset button on the remote control next to your bed, and the shower turns on and warms up to your desired temperature.  No more getting out of bed, turning on the shower, and waiting for it to get warm.  You can do it from the comfort of your own bed.  What's next???  (Curious on what's next, check out my article on TOTO toilets!!!)

When I started AT&T's LosetheLaptop.com contest, I was a bit nervous.  In fact, I thought the whole concept was crazy.  Would I be able to lose the laptop?  I wasn't sure.  But as I found out, what I thought would be more like a "disability" for me, ended up giving me new freedom.  Although I don't use my laptop very often, I do use my desktop computer daily.  And to be honest, I still do.  However, now I'm not "chained" down to my computer.  With my Tilt2 I can receive and reply to e-mail's from the dentist office, my car (parked, of course!), the grocery store, or even in my easy chair (yes, I'm the easy chair user in our family).  I can even help a friend by watching her children and blog my article about Day 1 on Spring Break using my Tilt2 at the same time.

Now, I shop for great cruise deals and travel deals  with ease from my easy chair, take less technology gear on vacation (no more U-haul's!), share the fun we're having at Knott's with friends on Facebook, and stand in line at Sprinkles Cupcakes while finding out on Facebook the Word of the Day is to receive my free cupcake!

I have found that I can now Shop until my Cellphone Drops (the connection!).  Black and white graphs (QR codes) and bars (barcodes) have new meaning to me and can greatly aid me in investigating products and comparison shopping.

Using my Tilt2 smartphone is actually a freeing experience.  Before the Tilt2 phone, I didn't have a data plan and used my smartphone only to sync with my Outlook calendar.  I wondered if the data plan would be worth the money.  My conclusion?  Yes!  It's worth the money!  I have new found freedom like never before.  As a part of the LosetheLaptop.com competition, I have been pushed to use the Tilt2 in new ways according to each month's topic.  This contest has helped me to explore and use my smartphone much more thoroughly than I would have on my own.  It is my hope that some of the things I covered in my posts here on LosetheLaptop.com  have enlightened you in new ways to use your smartphone as well.

As this is the last month of the contest, I URGE you to vote for your favorite blogger.  This month one blogger and one lucky reader will win $5,000!  Think of how many mobile apps you could buy with $5,000!  (and other stuff too!).  Please vote and leave a comment today - it makes our day!

Lori writes about making technology simple for busy moms and can be found at WellConnectedMom.com.  She also writes about technology for the home at theWellConnectedHome.com.  Follow Lori on Twitter @wellconnectdmom and @wellconnctdhome.  Please vote for Lori to earn a chance for $5,000!  The more votes you give this month, the better your chances of winning!  Good luck!

The Forgotten

The Forgotten

As the sliding glass door closed, I knew that something was wrong. But I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I hoped the feeling of the unknown would pass but for some reason, it only helped to raise my panic level a bit more.

The lights burned in a clean magnesium fire brightness, rows of orderliness behind steel grills in the ceiling. Their brilliance, though cool, caused a bead of sweat to appear on my brow, or was it because of something else? The doors slid behind me as I embarked on my mission.

I started walking up and down the rows, at times stopping to look or read, and other times to try to remember. Each row was unique, carefully arranged and categorized and labeled. There was definitely enough information there but perhaps it was too much. It verged on being overwhelming.

My stride, which had started as a slow amble, had changed to a quicker meter almost on its own. By the time I hit the middle row, I was walking briskly, glancing side to side as I went. By that time, my brow was wet with perspiration and wrinkled with frustration. I still had not found it. My memory had failed as well.

With a mad dash, I left the repeating rows right in the middle of the building, jumped in front of some people with bored looks on their faces, apologizing as I went, and headed to the monotonously sliding automatic glass door. As I stumbled up to it, it slid out of my way with barely an afterthought.

Once outside, the sun beat down on my already wet forehead. But instead of drying it up, it caused the rest of my body to get hot, resulting in even more drops on my brow. I wiped those away, part of me still perplexed and the other quite angry at my forgetfulness. More rows faced me this time and I tried to remember where my car was baking in the sun.

The asphalt was a bit squishy, and the black surface reflected heat up into the soles of my shoes. By the time I found my car, quietly roasting to a popping point, I was hot and quite angry with myself. I patted my pockets to find my keys, pulled them out, which, of course, I promptly dropped on the ground, scooped them up and unlocked the door.

Where was it? I frantically searched the glove compartment, the hand-rests, the dashboard and eventually found it. It had fallen between the seats. I picked it up and put it to use:

"Honey, what was it you wanted from the grocery store again?"

About this article: This post is part of an on-going series for the AT&T Lose the Laptop Challenge. This month’s challenge is all about SHOPPING. Remember to VOTE (for me, especially).
